More than $8,000 in donations pour in for the LLSC
This year’s Stars & Thunder event in Timmins was, no doubt, a great festival to experience.
But, what some might not have seen was that throughout the whole week, amazing Union Members were volunteering their time for a good cause. They stood, every afternoon and evening, in the parking lot at Food Basics, collecting donations for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).
It’s with the help of amazing Union Members like this, volunteering their time over and over again, that we can donate so much each year to this worthwhile cause.
The Local Union would like to thank the following Union Members for their time and heartfelt contributions to this fundraiser:
- Sheryl Raymond, Steward at Food Basics 642
- Linda Lefebvre, Chief Steward at Leuschen Transportation
- Tammy Levesque, Steward at Bearskin Airlines
- Francine Allaby, Steward at Dailey’s YIG
- Joy Searles, Executive Board VP and Steward at Dionne’s ValuMart
- Gilberta Lacoursiere, Steward at Food Basics 642
- Roxanne Jalbert, Steward at Leuschen Transportation
- Linda Harvey, Steward at Metro 201, and
- Colleen Nelson, Member at Dionne’s ValuMart.
Thank you as well, to our many supporters, like Nancy Belanger, Sandy Lester, and more.
There were a few prize winners out of our volunteers over the week as well! Gilberta Lacoursiere won a $100 Metro gift card. Roxanne Jalbert took home a Budweiser & Ruffles cooler, donated generously by Food Basics.
Last year’s total raised during Stars & Thunder was just over $12,000! A huge thank you to everyone donating to park at the Food Basics store in Timmins during the Stars & Thunder event this week!
This year you generously gave $8,289!
The LLSC and UFCW Canada partnered in 1985. Since that time, the UFCW Family of Union Members continues to be one of the, if not THE, top fundraiser contributing to the LLSC year after year.
In early June, UFCW Canada announced last year’s fundraising total as $2,512,929. This incredible amount is a direct result of the hard work, volunteered hours, and dedication of the Members of this great Union. At Locals 175 & 633 we were proud to contribute $241,756.33 to the cause on behalf of our Local Union Members.
In fact, this year’s contributions brought the UFCW running total to more than $41.4 million.
Ending blood cancer is a cause close to the hearts of many Members. At this year’s Star & Thunder fundraiser, Union Steward Tammy Levesque from Bearskin Airlines in Timmins, once again volunteered her time to assist in collecting donations.
Tammy’s daughter Erin received a leukemia diagnosis when she was very young. Tammy knows exactly what it’s like to be affected by this illness. Erin has been in remission for the better part of a decade now thanks to treatments and practices developed as a result of funds raised through generous donations.
